AYUSH — BAMS / BHMS & Traditional Medicine

Become a registered doctor in Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani or Siddha.

Entrance paths that lead here

NEET-UG

What it is

AYUSH degrees — BAMS (Ayurveda), BHMS (Homeopathy), BUMS (Unani), BSMS (Siddha) and Naturopathy & Yoga — train you as a registered practitioner in a recognised system of medicine, regulated by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine / Homoeopathy.

Why it matters

Interest in holistic and preventive wellness is rising in India and worldwide. AYUSH doctors serve in clinics, government AYUSH programmes, wellness and the fast-growing integrative-health sector — with lower entry competition than MBBS.

Why choose it — the benefits

  • A recognised 'Dr.' qualification and licence to practise.
  • Lower cut-offs than MBBS for the same NEET exam.
  • Growing demand in wellness, integrative health and government AYUSH.
  • Paths to PG (MD/MS in the respective system) and research.

Who is eligible

  • 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.
  • Minimum 50% aggregate in PCB (40% reserved, 45% PwD).
  • At least 17 by 31 December of the admission year.
  • Qualify NEET-UG — the same national exam as MBBS.

What you study

  • System foundations (e.g. Ayurvedic Samhita / Homeopathic Materia Medica) alongside modern Anatomy & Physiology.
  • Pathology, Pharmacology of the system, and diagnosis.
  • Clinical subjects (medicine, surgery, obstetrics) in the chosen system.
  • A supervised clinical internship.

How to apply — step by step

  1. 1Register and appear for NEET-UG.
  2. 2In counselling, choose AYUSH courses/colleges (AACCC for the all-India quota; state authority for state quota).
  3. 3Accept the allotted seat and report with documents.
  4. 4Confirm the college is recognised by the relevant AYUSH commission.

  • Research each system honestly to pick the one that fits you.
  • Verify college recognition before joining.

Honest challenges to weigh

  • !Scope of practice and acceptance vary by state and setting.
  • !Earnings early on are often lower than allopathic peers.
  • !Growth usually needs PG or a strong niche practice.

Where it leads — jobs in India

  • Own AYUSH clinic or practice after registration.
  • Government AYUSH hospitals, dispensaries and wellness centres.
  • Wellness resorts, integrative-health and pharma (herbal) roles.

Opportunities abroad

  • Ayurveda / Yoga wellness roles abroad (regulation varies by country).
  • Consulting and teaching in the global wellness industry.

Indicative earnings

Indicative: ₹3–7 LPA early; established practice or PG earns considerably more.
